Wines of the Untermoserhof

Wine with a Signature

At the Untermoserhof, winemaking is far more than a craft—it is a way of life. Every vintage is a new dialogue with nature, shaped by patience, decades of experience, and a deep trust in our vineyard sites. We let the vines guide us, intervening only when necessary. The result is wine that doesn’t follow a formula but carries our personal signature: honest, pure, and unmistakably South Tyrolean.

Vernatsch and Lagrein are the soul of our farm. Our St. Magdalener “Hub & Leith” presents itself as a juicy, vibrant classic that embodies the elegance of our home. In contrast stands the powerful Lagrein Riserva “Hofacker”—spicy, dense, and with impressive length. This duo is complemented by international varieties such as our precise Pinot Bianco “Kardatsch” or the complex “Lehm & Kies,” which develop a unique alpine character on our soils.

Names that
Tell a Story

Names like “Moraine” or “Kardatsch” are not marketing terms for us; they are tributes to our origin. When you enjoy a sip of our succulent Chardonnay “Moraine,” you taste the power of ancient glacial deposits. Our blend “Lehm & Kies” (Merlot and Cabernet Franc), in turn, tells of the soil’s texture where the roots search for a foothold. These names provide a sense of place, making the connection between the earth and the glass tangible.

From the Vine to the Glass

At the Untermoserhof, the path from the cellar to the tasting table is short. We invite you to discover our wines where they are born. Amidst the vineyards, the aromas unfold differently when you feel the wind and see the earth that nourished the vine. It is an experience for all the senses—an encounter with the winemaker, the craft, and the devotion bottled in every single vintage.

Our wines mature in an environment that blends tradition with modern cellar technology. While the architecture of the barn makes a contemporary statement above ground, the cellar holds the silence and constancy a great wine needs to become whole. The layout of our cellar allows us to guide each variety individually—from the fresh, crisp Pinot Bianco to the complex Riserva as it slowly reaches perfection.

Our 15-year-old Pinot Bianco vines grow on the cool eastern slopes above Caldaro at 500 meters above sea level. On this lime-rich loamy soil, the wine develops an extraordinary minerality. Through a careful, extended aging process of twelve months in tonneaus on the full lees, followed by another six months in stainless steel, a wine of great tension, depth, and territoriality is born.

Grown partly on loamy glacial moraine soil and partly on limestone gravel. After harvest, the grapes are pressed immediately. Fermentation takes place in barriques (10% new), where the wine matures for twelve months on the full lees. This is followed by another half-year in stainless steel tanks before the wine is bottled.

This wine is the heart of our estate and an ambassador of its origin. On the sun-drenched porphyry slopes surrounding the Untermoserhof, a St. Magdalener of tension and precision thrives. This wine is intended to express its heritage and the high drinkability (glou-glou) of the Vernatsch (Schiava) grape variety.

Our classic Lagrein perfectly captures the youthful energy of the variety. The grapes come from younger vines in the Rentsch and St. Magdalena sites, where they unfold their full fruit on warm porphyry soils. An honest South Tyrolean wine that impresses with its excellent drinkability and dark berry aromas.

For our Lagrein Riserva, we use grapes from the older vines of our Lagrein parcels. The wine matures patiently for one year in 500-liter tonneaus and then for another six months in large wooden casks. The result is a characterful red wine that skillfully combines the power of the Lagrein variety with great elegance, impressively reflecting the ideal terroir of Rentsch and St. Magdalena.

A wine of structure and finesse. This Bordeaux blend combines approx. 40% Merlot from heavy clay soil and 60% Cabernet Franc from pebbly limestone gravel soils. The high planting density and low yield per vine guarantee a high concentration with impressive length and juiciness.

These 40-year-old vines benefit from the cool breezes of the Mendelkamm ridge, which lends the wine its characteristic elegance. Through careful aging in used barriques, we preserve a clear fruit while simultaneously providing it with a fine structure.

This Grand Cru site on the crest of the St. Magdalena hill produces wines of great character, juiciness, and precision. With slightly darker and spicier fruit, the "Hub & Leith" single-vineyard site is always highly recognizable and expressive. Here, we typically work with up to 30% whole-cluster fermentation.

The "Hofacker" single-vineyard site is only bottled separately in the best vintages. The grapes come from our oldest vines—living witnesses that produce a wine of immense depth. With a high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation and nearly four years of aging, this Lagrein is a monument built for eternity.
